Homegrown Hero Award Presented to John Migas
October 06, 2022
On Wednesday, September 28, 2022, the Lehman B. Mengel “Homegrown Hero Award” was presented to John Migas, Truck Driver at our Frederick location, for the heroic and lifesaving measures he took to save a fellow driver on Friday, July 22, 2022.
While driving the inner loop of the Beltway in Baltimore County, John witnessed a tractor-trailer behind him overturn and slide into the median after it moved into the left lane to allow traffic to merge from an entrance ramp, causing its load to shift. John came to a stop, safely parking his tractor-trailer on the berm of the beltway, and ran to the accident. There, he and another passerby were able to remove the driver from her rig, though she had a significant injury and a concerning amount of bleeding on her left arm. With permission from the driver to assist her, John thought quickly and used his LB Water t-shirt as a tourniquet. When this did not hold, the other passerby found a rope that was used as a better tourniquet. John instructed the driver to keep her arm above her head until paramedics arrived on the scene. Due to John’s quick actions, the woman was able to avoid extreme blood loss and be safely treated.
John Migas was one of only two motorists who stopped to assist the driver that day. His swift and heroic decisions saved a life. John displayed exemplary, selfless, altruistic behavior in the face of danger that crucially contributes to the betterment of society, therefore earning the Lehman B. Mengel “Homegrown Hero Award.”
LB Water congratulates John on earning such a high honor, but more importantly, we thank him for putting his life on the line to save another's.
